The MP40 upgrade is actually p terrible but works ok to dissuade rushes to close range that many allies like (I'm looking at you Shocks and Rangers).
Done properly it guarantees you will win clashes (at considerable MP bleed, mind you!) and improve upon the excellent OKW infantry durability. The key is to use it as support just behind the front line.
